Why Go Beyond Checklists?

A completed checklist can tell you that a requirement was documented. The more useful questions often come next: What can this clinician do? Where is additional support needed? How does the assessment connect to everyday practice?

For educators and leaders, those questions create an opportunity to reconsider familiar processes. Orientation and annual competency assessment should have a clear purpose, with learning and validation activities that reflect the work people actually perform.

Our previous TSAM® and Donna Wright workshop explored that shift through practical learning. The returning experience gives more healthcare professionals an opportunity to work through it with expert guidance.

Day 1: Rethink Nurse Onboarding with TSAM®

The first day explores the Tiered Skills Acquisition Model with Dr. Ellen Joswiak. Participants will develop individualized orientation pathways and consider tools that help preceptors support progression.

Think about the questions your team encounters during orientation. How do you recognize a learner’s starting point? What does readiness for greater responsibility look like? How can preceptors communicate progress consistently?

Bring those questions with you. Learning alongside colleagues offers space to examine your current approach and think through what a more purposeful orientation experience could look like.

Day 2: Explore the Donna Wright Competency Assessment Model™

Day two focuses on the Donna Wright Competency Assessment Model™, moving annual validation toward outcome-based performance assurance.

This is an opportunity to look closely at the purpose behind your competency requirements. What prompted each requirement? Is it still relevant? Does the validation method give your team useful information?

Taking time to examine those questions can help you identify where your current process deserves a fresh look.
